Is OKX Safe? Proof of Reserves & Security Review

After 2022 taught the industry that "trust us" is not an audit, exchange safety became measurable: does the venue prove its reserves, how does it custody funds, who regulates it, and what happens when something goes wrong? Here's how OKX scores on each — and what you should do on your side regardless.

Short answer: OKX is among the more verifiable major exchanges — monthly proof-of-reserves with self-audit tooling, majority cold storage, and a growing licence footprint. No exchange is risk-free; the account checklist at the end applies everywhere.

Proof of Reserves: the strongest point

Since late 2022, OKX has published monthly Proof of Reserves (PoR) reports covering major assets like BTC, ETH, and USDT. Two things distinguish its program:

  • Cadence. Monthly publication is stricter than the periodic or one-off snapshots some competitors provide — see how venues compare on the comparison page.
  • Self-verification. Users can independently confirm their own balance was included in the Merkle tree, and inspect on-chain wallet holdings, rather than trusting a summary PDF.

Reserve ratios have consistently printed at or above 100% for covered assets, meaning user deposits are backed 1:1 by exchange-held assets.

Custody and infrastructure

  • Cold storage majority: the bulk of user assets sit in offline, multi-signature wallets; hot wallets hold only operational float.
  • Risk fund: a dedicated reserve exists to absorb incidents before user funds are touched.
  • Track record: operating since 2017, OKX has not suffered a major exchange-wallet hack — a meaningfully long streak in this industry, though never a guarantee.

Regulation and licensing

Post-MiCA, jurisdiction matters. OKX operates licensed or registered entities across several regions — EU (MiCA authorisation), UAE, Singapore, and a US entry — with regional entities enforcing local KYC and product rules. Details of the corporate history are on our about page. For users, the practical consequences are that identity verification is mandatory and product availability varies by country.

The risks that remain

Honest scoring requires the other column:

  • Counterparty risk never reaches zero. PoR proves assets existed at snapshot time; it cannot prove the absence of liabilities. Keep long-term holdings in self-custody.
  • Product risk is yours. The exchange being safe doesn't make 50x leverage safe — read the risk sections of the futures overview before trading derivatives.
  • Phishing targets users, not vaults. Most losses on any major exchange come from compromised accounts, not exchange breaches — which is what the next section is for.

Your day-one security checklist

  1. Authenticator-app 2FA — never SMS-only; SIM-swap attacks are routine.
  2. Anti-phishing code — a personal phrase included in genuine OKX emails, making fakes obvious.
  3. Withdrawal allowlist — restrict withdrawals to pre-approved addresses with a time-locked change window.
  4. Passkey / hardware key login where available.
  5. Bookmark the real domain — and never log in from links in emails or DMs.

Verdict

On the measurable axes — reserve transparency, custody practice, regulatory posture, incident history — OKX sits in the top tier of global exchanges in 2026. Treat it like any exchange regardless: enable every protection, self-custody what you don't trade, and size positions like the futures guide recommends.
